Our mission
The homelessness crisis is impossible to ignore in major cities like New York City, where it’s become so common that many locals have developed tolerance for it. People stroll by without a second glance, teaching their children to avoid eye contact and pretend the issue doesn’t exist. While many homeless individuals struggle with substance abuse, making interactions unsafe, the bigger question is: why has there been so little done to address the problem? Pouring millions into anti-homeless benches and other cruel solutions only pushes people further into the margins.
Dignity in Design is a fiscally sponsored nonprofit on a mission to raise awareness against hostile architecture. Hostile architecture refers to urban design strategies created to make public spaces uncomfortable or inaccessible. These designs are often used to push homeless individuals out of sight. While the ethics of these designs are up for debate, we’re here to challenge the idea that architecture and design should be used as tools for discrimination. We want to show the world that design and architecture, a form of art, are meant to bring joy. We take steps to inspire people, including you, to stand up for more inclusive and compassionate spaces for all.
